Well I believe my dad worked with Mrs. Lewis and for my birthday he got me a signed jersey. When I got the jersey my dad told me about the camps he holds and the foundation he runs. After I found out about how much money I needed to raise I immediately thought about asking the foundation if they could help support me.

How did you connect with Marcedes and the Foundation?

When I first got my jersey I called Marcedes to thank him and he talked to me about what I need to do to play with the big boys. I thought it was so amazing to talk to a pro football player that I saved his number and made sure I always transferred it to my new phone! One day I called and emailed him asking him if he could help me out with my senior project.

How did you find this cause? And what was it that drew you to helping?

In the state of Washington you can’t graduate unless you complete a “senior project” so while searching for a project I remembered a couple of my friends had gone to Peru the year before to do the same thing I was looking at doing. I was drawn to this because I felt like this wasn’t an ordinary domestic project. This was an opportunity to help the less fortunate and not something that just benefits me.

Can you tell us a bit about what you did out there?

While in Guatemala we went to a small community call Urbina, Cantel and built a basketball court for a local school there. We built the court from scratch so we had to make the cement and lay it all down. It required a lot of rocks, sand, water, and cement bags. Each bag weighed about 90lbs and we unloaded at least 150 bags. It was hard because not everyone was capable of lifting these bags so I and a couple others had to carry a lot of the weight but it didn’t bother me any because I was there to make a difference and to make good progress someone has to step up and put the team on their back.

What is the main thing you have taken away from this experience?

The main thing I took out of this experience was to appreciate the things I do have and not to worry about the things that I don’t. The Guatemalan people had little to nothing and lived in houses that were half way made out of dirt but I am willing to argue they are happier than most of the people in America! They have this word I will never forget which is “Tranquilo” It basically means be calm and relax. Whenever something went wrong while building the court the people would always say “Tranquilo” and then they would find something to keep them busy.

I would like to say thank you to the Marcedes Lewis foundation. Without them I wouldn’t have been able to go on the trip, and without this trip I wouldn’t have been able to graduate. I am very thankful for their donation and they definitely helped me get to where I am now. Thank you Marcedes and all the Foundation volunteers.

Well another year is coming to an end…a year in which I was very blessed, and I’m thankful for that. Many people look forward to the New Year for a new start to old habits. I promise that won’t be me! Lol…but seriously I look forward to taking it one day at a time, rising above all negativity and anything that could potentially hold me back!

ABOUT MARCEDES LEWIS FOUNDATION                                                                                                                          The Marcedes Lewis Foundation was established by Marcedes Lewis to support the youth in our community. His love of children and the success of a childhood dream prompted Marcedes to start this Foundation.

The goal of the Foundation is to award scholarships to youth in the community who otherwise would not be able to participate in youth sports such as football, baseball, basketball, volleyball, soccer, etc. The scholarship recipients will be required to maintain certain academic standards and report to the Foundation periodically.

The Foundation will follow each recipient through his/her youth and high school years in the hope of being able to assist in any necessities that he/she may incur as they enter college.

The ultimate goal is for the Foundation to grow to a point to support sending a child to college on a full ride. The college recipient would also have requirements that will have to be met to receive a scholarship renewal each year.

When I woke up this morning, I had no idea I’d be walking into the facility with an interim Head Coach. This morning Coach Del Rio was relieved of his duties as the Head Coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. I’m still in shock that it had to happen right now, given we have five games still remaining on the schedule. This is obviously a very unfortunate and uncomfortable situation, not for just our organization and team, but for Jack Del Rio and his family.

I know I speak for my entire team when I say that we have nothing but respect and love for Coach Del Rio. Personally, I’m now in my sixth year as a Jacksonville Jaguar. In 2006, Coach Del Rio anchored an organization that gave me my first opportunity at doing what I love to do at the highest level possible. He’s always treated me like a man and respected me as such- for that I am greatly appreciative!

Last season was the type of year Marcedes Lewis had been waiting for. In his fifth season, the 6­ 6, 275-pound tight end for the Jaguars had career highs in receptions (58), yards (700) and touchdowns (10) and made the Pro Bowl. But still, there was no playoff appearance for Jacksonville, something Lewis hopes to help the Jags change very soon. Before the Jaguars’ final preseason game, Lewis answered questions from Sporting News readers.

1) Would you rather catch a pass across the middle between the linebackers or stretch the  field against the safety? — via Facebook

LEWIS: Stretch the field against the safety—and I think (quarterback) David (Garrard) is better at stretching the field, too.

2) What do you like to do when you have a chance to take a break from playing football? — via Facebook

LEWIS: When I’m not playing, I like to bowl. I like to watch movies. I like to shoot hoops. I also have a foundation— marcedeslewisfoundation.org— and whenever I’m not playing football or bowling or going to the movies, I’m giving back to my community and making the kids happy.

3) Which new player on the team do you expect to have an impact this season? — via bigcatcountry.com

LEWIS: We have a lot of new, different pieces to the puzzle, (so) that’s kind of hard. I’m going to go with Cecil Shorts, our (rookie) receiver. He’s a smooth receiver. He’s a guy who picks up things real fast and has a nose for the football, and I think that’s going to help us stretch the field to where defenses can’t just look at me or look at Maurice (Jones-Drew) and try to book us that way. He’s going to be a big addition to our offense.

4) Since you trained in MMA this summer, do you think you can go one-on-one with UFC champion Anderson Silva? — via bigcatcountry.com

LEWIS: Yeah, I trained MMA this summer. It was great—it was a great experience. It is definitely something that I will continue to do. Given our special situation with the lockout, I was able to go about five, 5½ months. It was great—transforming my body, my mind and my spirit. Would I be able to go one-on-one with Anderson Silva? No. Nobody can go one-on-one with Anderson Silva.

5) Do you drive a Mercedes? — via bigcatcountry.com

LEWIS: I don’t drive a Mercedes. I’m working on that. Hopefully I’ll be able to do something in the future with them. But I don’t drive a Mercedes as of now. I drive a Camaro.
