JACKSONVILLE — They chanted “Duval” and did it together.
Players chanted, and fans chanted, too. This was the scene Sunday night as an estimated 10,000 fans welcomed the Jaguars to EverBank Field after a 45-42 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in AFC Divisional Playoff at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pa.
This was delirium. This was celebration. This was joy.
This was Duval.
“I hope you understand how much we appreciate the support we’ve been able to build through the year,” Jaguars Head Coach Doug Marrone told the crowd.
Marrone handed off the microphone for players to speak to the crowd.
Tight end Marcedes Lewis, a 12-year veteran and the only active Jaguars player to have played in a postseason game for the team before this season, spoke last.
“I speak on behalf of the organization and the team: the support you guys have for us, it makes us to be able to do our job that much easier,” he said. “It’s like a partnership. We all work together. … Keep it up. We’ve got two more weeks. We appreciate it.”
The Jaguars will play the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass., Sunday at 3:05 p.m.
